New York Times video “Barefoot Running”

This video is about how barefoot running makes runners less prone to injury, which contradicts conventional wisdom that says serious runners need $100+ shoes.  The video profiles Christopher McDougall, author of the book “Born to Run” about the Tarahumara people of Copper Canyon, Mexico, who can run hundreds of miles at a time wearing only thin sandals.  McDougall stopped running with shoes once he adopted their technique, and has not had a running related injury since.

This was a perfect story to be told by video.  For people to believe that it’s enjoyable to run barefoot, they need to see it, not just have it described in writing.  Video also allows McDougall, who was accompanied by the Times’s Well blogger, Brian Fidelman, to demonstrate the proper running technique, essential for aspiring barefoot runners.  According to Fidelman, who paraphrased McDougall, one must run “upright, with quick, light landings, and have good posture- head over your shoulders, over your hips, over your knees.”

Seeing McDougal and Fidelman running barefoot through the asphalt walkways of central park is likely to convert even the most traditionally minded running- shoe runners.  In many ways, the video is a public service announcement.  It shows people should not spend exorbitant amounts of money on over hyped shoes, and enlightens about medical research into barefoot running- McDougal cites a 1989 University of Oregon study that found running shoes cause more injuries, not less.
